We often hoard our clothing, whether for sentimental value, or simply not knowing proper disposal and recycling methods. The Break Up is a campaign that views our ‘relationship’ with clothes as we do with humans — we need to know when it’s time to let go. The project manifests itself as a website and exhibition that showcases the stories between the clothes and their ex-lovers. We hope to encourage our visitors to be mindful of their next purchases, and to reminisce with their owned clothing before their future departure.

The website appears as and functions as if it were an actual e-commerce site. It was a fun way to showcase the clothing items — clicking into their product pages would bring you to the stories between the item and their ex-lover.

For our capstone exhibition, we presented our website in the form of a pop-up shop. The donated items were displayed, with selected love letters for visitors to read. Our video interviews were available for anyone who wanted to listen, and we had ‘receipts’ for anyone wanting to write down an item they wish to part with on their own.
